Why GCWX exists, and where it's headed
I've been a weather geek since I was 8 years old. At home, I've built out an extensive weather setup: a personal Ecowitt station feeding into Home Assistant, with a dashboard that goes well past "temperature and chance of rain" into the kind of severe-weather ingredients meteorologists actually watch (instability, shear, moisture, the works).
The problem was that all of it lived at home. The moment I walked out the door, I lost it. GCWX exists to fix that. It's the same curated information I've already built for myself, just available wherever I actually am.
And since I'd already done the work of building it for myself, it seemed like a natural next step to share it, in case anyone else nearby is enough of a weather geek (or even just a little bit curious) to find it useful too.
I also looked around before building this. There's no shortage of general weather sites, and no shortage of tools built for meteorologists that already track things like CAPE, shear, and helicity. But the general sites don't go anywhere near that level of detail, and the professional tools assume you already speak the language: acronyms with no explanation, numbers with no context for what "high" or "low" actually means. I couldn't find anything that put a personal weather station's live data next to plain-language severe weather dynamics in one place, built for someone who isn't already a meteorologist. So I built it.
